Writing in Kindergarten

Writing in kindergarten is a fun and exciting thing!  We work very hard throughout the year to master lots of kinds of writing.  First, we begin
to work on mastering how to write at all...how to hold a pencil and form our names, letters and words.  We spend a great deal of time learning
the correct formations of all of the letters in the alphabet.  We use the zaner-bloser style of writing (shown in the poster below).  Your child will  be expected to use this style when writing.

After working to master beginning writing skills...we move on to working on expressing our thoughts in writing.  We work on mastering the
parts of sentence-capital letter, space fingers between words and punctuation at the end of sentence.  By the end of the year...we would like to see
each child be able to writing at least 3 sentences about a topic.  Here are a few websites that discuss writing and spelling development.  We absolutely DO NOT expect students to use correct spelling for unknown words (high frequency words are posted on the wall).  We use "invented spelling" or spell the way you hear it.  For example...butterfly may be spelled btrfli because that is what the student hear in the word.  This is how writers begin their progression to correct spelling!
